چکیده

There is a need for treatment technologies that can effectively address environmental concerns associated with anaerobic lagoons typically used to manage manure. These technologies must be able to capture nutrients, kill pathogens, and reduce emissions of ammonia (NH ) and nuisance odors. To meet these needs, a wastewater treatment plant was demonstrated at full-scale in one of two 4,360-pig production units in a finishing farm in Duplin Co., NC. The second production unit was used as a control. Both production units had similar animal production management and lagoons with similar surface area (about 0.9 ha each). The treatment plant processed raw manure and the corresponding lagoon was used to store the treated water. The quality of the lagoon liquid was rapidly improved as clean effluent replaced dirty liquid. Our objective was to study changes in NH emissions as a result of improved water quality. The study was done one year after lagoon conversion and included cold and warm weather conditions. Passive flux samplers were used to measure simultaneously the NH gas fluxes from both the treated and traditional anaerobic lagoons. Average total NH -N (TAN) concentrations in lagoon liquid were 31 and 388 mg/L in the treated and traditional systems, respectively. 3

Abatement of Ammonia Emissions from Swine Lagoons Using Polymer‐enhanced Solid‐liquid Separation

A study was conducted to determine the effects of solid‐liquid separation of liquid swine manure on ammonia emissions from lagoons. This determination was done at full‐scale in two contiguous swine production units that had similar animal production management. One of these units was maintained as a control using the anaerobic lagoon treatment method. In the second production unit, solids were ...

Characterizing ammonia emissions from Swine Farms in Eastern North Carolina: Reduction of emissions from water-holding structures at two candidate superior technologies for waste treatment

Program OPEN (Odor, Pathogens, and Emissions of Nitrogen) was an integrated study of the emissions of ammonia (NH3), odor and odorants, and pathogens from potential environmentally superior technologies (ESTs) for swine facilities in eastern North Carolina. This paper, as part of program OPEN, focuses on quantifying emissions of NH3 from waterholding structures at two of the best ESTs and compa...

Development of environmentally superior treatment system to replace anaerobic swine lagoons in the USA.

A full-scale treatment system for swine manure was developed to eliminate discharge to surface and ground waters and contamination of soil and groundwater by nutrients and heavy metals, along with related release of ammonia, odor, and pathogens. The system greatly increased the efficiency of liquid-solid separation by polymer injection to increase solids flocculation. Nitrogen management to red...

Biofuel Production on Swine Farm Methane and Ammonia Emissions

1984 Methane (CH4) and ammonia (NH3) are emitted to the atmosphere during anaerobic processing of organic matter, and both gases have detrimental environmental eff ects. Methane conversion to biofuel production has been suggested to reduce CH4 emissions from animal manure processing systems. Th e purpose of this research is to evaluate the change in CH4 and NH3 emissions in an animal feeding op...
